Chlorine and chloramine keep city water safe on the way to your home, then slowly oxidize your softener's resin. Chloramine does the most damage, and more cities are switching to it. Remove them first to extend resin life by up to 25% and get water that is better for your skin, hair and drinking.
Which one? Whole house backwashing gives the best filtration. Upflow costs less, uses no water and has fewer parts to maintain.
Sizing: choose at least 1.5 cubic feet, ideally 2.0 where chloramine is present. If your softener is larger than 2.0 cubic feet, match its size.
