Spun poly water filters, also called spun polypropylene or melt blown sediment filters, are the most widely used sediment filter cartridges in residential water treatment. They are made from polypropylene fibres spun into a dense cartridge that captures sand, silt, rust, scale and other suspended particles throughout its depth, not just on the surface. Spun poly sediment filters are available in a range of micron ratings and in standard 2.5" x 10" and 2.5" x 20" sizes as well as 4.5" x 10" and 4.5" x 20" Big Blue sizes for whole house filtration. They are commonly used as a stand alone sediment filter or as a pre-filter that protects carbon filters, reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and ultraviolet (UV) systems from particles that would otherwise shorten their life or reduce performance.
Choosing the right spun poly filter comes down to housing size and micron rating: a lower micron rating removes finer particles but will clog faster on water with heavy sediment, which is why many systems use a coarser filter first. Spun poly cartridges remove particles only, not dissolved contaminants, chlorine or odours, and should be replaced when water pressure noticeably drops or every 3 to 6 months.
